A mother and her baby visiting the doctor at the clinic

Your first follow-up visit is the start of the journey: we confirm where the pregnancy is and how far along it is, and set up your follow-up plan. A little preparation makes the visit quicker and clearer.

When should you book your first visit?

Book as soon as your pregnancy test is positive. The first check-up is usually between weeks 6 and 10 counted from the first day of your last period, when we can see the pregnancy and the baby's heartbeat on ultrasound.

What to bring

  • The date of the first day of your last period.
  • Any tests or scans you've had before.
  • The names of any medicines and vitamins you take.
  • Details of any previous pregnancies, births or operations.
  • Your questions, written down so you don't forget any.

What happens during the visit?

  1. A full medical history, yours and your family's.
  2. Blood pressure and weight.
  3. An ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy is in the right place, date it and check the heartbeat.
  4. Basic tests such as a blood count, blood group, blood sugar and a urine test, plus others depending on your situation.

Useful questions to ask

  • Should I keep taking my current vitamins or change them?
  • Which foods and activities should I avoid for now?
  • Which warning signs mean I should call you straight away?
  • When is my next visit and what will it include?
